MAY ISSUE: POST #16
I remember spending so much time with racing games growing up. I liked all that whizzing around and trying to win and bragging when I did. I didn’t play too many of them though, and I’ve definitely gotten into a lot more over the last couple of years. This list of racing games is a list of those that have more of a fun and friendly style, whether that be cartoony or just plain colourful. These are games that you can be competitive with, but also whilst babysitting ten children.
Mario Kart
Starting off with an obvious title, Mario Kart is the game that a lot of people from my generation grew up with. Especially Mario Kart Wii and DS, in my opinion. Those titles were great and I remember back in those days, I would actually play games with other people. Mario Kart was one of the games we would all play. I also used to play online, which is crazy, because I hardly ever play online anymore. But I’m thankful that I still hold some skill when it comes to this game. I’m pretty sure I could beat my Dad at it.
Table Top Racing
I played this game so much and it’s a lot of fun too. You race in little cars on table tops and it’s so adorable and cute and reminds me of when I used to play with small car toys when I was younger. I have this on Steam but I would love the digital copy for the Vita because I think the graphics and concept would fit perfectly. You can get so many different cars and tracks and you just want to collect them all.
ModNation Racers
I’ve played this game a lot too, and it definitely wins the most points in terms of customization. You can customise your character, cart and tracks so much it’s insane, so I really think this game is underrated. It’s actually a fairly humorous game too, with decent cutscenes and voice acting. Honestly, it’s a blast. There’s also a version on PSP too, so if you fancy trying out a handheld version, there’s an option.
F1 RaceStars
I haven’t played too much of this game yet, but it definitely has that appealing cartoony family-friendly look to it. It looks like a lot of fun. My Dad was a huge F1 fan, so it’s kind of an interesting game for me to play (constantly waiting and expecting crashes). I’m not sure why F1 drivers can’t look like this in real life- I think it would make it much more entertaining. But anyway, this is the game I’ve played the least of in this list, but when it was included in a Humble Bundle at one point, I got it because of this game. It looks so awesome and fun, and has the exact style that makes me say ‘aw yeah, this is going to be a guilty pleasure’.
Cars
Cars 2 is one of my favourite animated films that I watched last year. It made me happy to learn that the video games for the series aren’t too bad either, and I’ve proceeded to buy three of them since. I’ve still only played Cars 2 though, and I enjoyed the racing and being able to drive around as the characters from the movies. Of course, when I heard that you can drive around freely in the land of Cars in Cars, I just had to pick that one up. Because cars. I haven’t tried it yet, even with my husband bugging me, but it seems like a fun and lighthearted game to play, and I’m a sucker for fun and lightheartedness.
So that was 5 games I’ve recently played that are pretty family-friendly, because, you never know, my audience could be completely 6-year-olds by this point. We should all appreciate family-friendly titles because let’s face it, nobody wants 24/7 gore and action, right? Every now and then you want to let go and play something that people may judge you for. But, frankly, it doesn’t matter when you’re having fun.
